Description

Reconciliation and the evolution of Canada

The Institute for Canadian Citizenship (ICC) presents the 19th LaFontaine-Baldwin Lecture, Reconciliation and the evolution of Canada, featuring Canada’s Governor General, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon.

The historical narrative of Canada has often ignored Indigenous voices and stories, negatively influencing how Indigenous peoples have been treated and perceived in this country. Many newcomers to Canada have limited or no experience with Indigenous issues, people, or culture throughout their citizenship journey. For newcomers to join the parallel path toward reconciliation, they need to understand Canada’s true history.

Her Excellency’s address will explore the importance of teaching Canada’s true history–the good and the bad – both as acts of reconciliation and citizenship for all Canadians to engage with, even if you recently arrived.

Join the Institute for Canadian Citizenship for this historic event featuring an evening filled with insightful discussions and important commentary on Reconciliation and the evolution of Canada. Click here for more information.

Why should you attend?

Since 2000, the LaFontaine-Baldwin Lectures have gathered Canadians to reflect on democracy, citizenship and the public good. Established by John Ralston Saul, the lectures honour the leaders of Canada’s first democratic movement, Louis-Hippolyte LaFontaine and Robert Baldwin.

Doors open at 6:00 PM for a reception featuring cultural showcases, and light refreshments. The official program begins at 8:00 PM.
